GiWiArch aka Giants, Wizards and Archers are a very powerful combo for farming, trophy pushing and Clan War (though you cannot usually use it in Clan War after TH 7). This strategy is very effective from TH 5 to TH 9. You will always get at least 1 or 2 star (sometimes 3 star also) by using this strategy.

Though Dragons are the most popular troop in TH 7 and 8, but in Town Hall 7, if the base design is too complicated, you probably cannot get a 3 star by using this strategy. So for such bases, you should have prepared another strategy for attacking TH 7.

From town hall 1, whenever you get the access of your first two troops (i.e. Barbarians and Archers) you used to use them as your only troops. But as you advance in your game, more troops unlocks in every town hall level. It's good to try out new troops as they are relatively stronger than the previous troops.
